IT-Consultant / Teacher

Time frame
Min. 2 weeks - 12 months
Requirements
The project is located in Villas de Ayarco, which is an outlying community of Tres Rios, Cartago, Costa Rica, which is only about 25 minutes from the capital San José. This project, designed to reach out to the hurt and lost, was initiated by a few local Costa Rican people and very little money. It has since grown into a major effort as more people have joined to complete the task at hand.
In 1998-99, money to purchase approximately 2.4 acres of land was raised locally in Costa Rica with none of the money coming from stateside sources. Construction on Phase I of the Abraham Project was initiated in February 2002. A crew of local people was hired to begin the construction work. The tedious work of digging footers and pouring foundations was under way. Since that time, they have been able to complete Children’s Homes, Daycare, Professional Consultation Offices and Life-Skills Workshops, here they provide training to help people learn specific skills that will facilitate finding a job or starting a small business. Some of the classes that are offered include English, computer, artisan crafts, manicure/pedicure, cooking and sewing.
-
Good knowledge in IT
-
Be flexible, organized, and willing to serve in our areas of greatest need
-
Willingness to learn basic Spanish or work with a translator
-
Prepared to invest some time in training before and during placement
-
Willing to adapt and to be flexible to the local culture, food etc.
The Abraham project has a computer lab, where they need a tech-consultant who helps them set up new computer system and fix old ones. It is very appreciated, if this volunteer would teach men of the neighborhood programming or IT-Skills. The vision is to give these men a vocational training in different areas, so they can get a job later and have an impact on their community. Many of the people that live in these areas are considered low-income families, so classes are provided for a very small amount or without charge. The volunteer can decide how many hours you want to donate to attend the people in the surrounding communities.
